Every year, the first heavy rain in Ghaziabad is followed by a jump in calls to our shop. Water changes how pests behave: it floods their nests, fills breeding sites and pushes them indoors. Knowing what to expect lets you prevent most of it.
Mosquitoes and dengue season
The Aedes mosquito that spreads dengue breeds in small amounts of clean, still water — a flower-pot tray, a cooler, an AC drip tray, a tyre on the terrace, an uncovered water tank. Larvae become adults in about a week. That is why the most effective step is a weekly "dry day": empty and scrub every container that holds water. For societies, add larvicide to sumps and tanks that cannot be emptied, and schedule fogging at dusk along drains and parks.
Termite swarmers
On warm humid evenings, especially after rain, winged termites fly out of colonies to start new ones. Seeing a cloud of them near a tube light, or a pile of wings on the balcony next morning, means there is an established colony nearby — possibly in your building. Swarmers themselves do not damage wood, but they are a clear signal to book an inspection.
Cockroaches from drains
When sewer lines fill with rainwater, large American cockroaches are pushed up through bathroom and balcony drains. Ground-floor and lower-floor flats in builder floors feel this first. Closable drain covers and a drain treatment before the monsoon make a big difference.
Ants, silverfish and damp-loving insects
Ants move indoors when their soil nests flood, and silverfish thrive in damp wardrobes and on old books. Keep wardrobes ventilated, use silica packets, and do not store cartons on the floor of damp rooms.
A simple month-by-month plan
- June (pre-monsoon): general pest control, drain treatment, check water tank lids and terrace drains.
- July–August: weekly dry day at home; societies start fogging and larvicide rounds.
- September: watch for termite signs after swarming; book an inspection if you saw wings.
- October–November: continue mosquito control until temperatures drop; follow-up general service.
Checklist for RWAs
- Clean roof drains and terrace outlets before the first rain.
- Cover or treat basement sumps and decorative water bodies.
- Schedule weekly fogging in peak months and monthly larvicide rounds.
- Remove construction debris and discarded items that collect water.
- Circulate a "dry day" reminder to residents every week.
A ten-minute weekly check for your flat
Once a week during the rains, walk through your flat with a torch. Look under the kitchen sink for damp and cockroach droppings, check the AC drip tray and the plant trays on the balcony, lift the bathroom drain cover and make sure it closes properly, and look along the skirting of rooms facing the outside wall for thin mud lines. Open wardrobes that stay shut most of the time and check the back panels for softness or a musty smell. It takes ten minutes and catches most problems while they are still small.
If you live on a lower floor of a builder floor or a tower, pay extra attention to the bathroom and balcony drains after a night of heavy rain — that is when sewer cockroaches are pushed up. Ground-floor homes with a front lawn should also check the base of the main door frame, where garden soil meets wood.
