Rodent Proofing for Flats: Keep Rats and Mice Out

Rodent Proofing for Flats: Keep Rats and Mice Out

Killing rats solves today's problem. Proofing — blocking the way they get in — solves next month's. Most entry points in a flat are easy to fix once you know where to look.

How small a gap is too small?

A house mouse can squeeze through a gap about the width of a pencil. A young rat needs only a little more. If you can push a pen into a gap, assume a mouse can use it.

Kitchen

  • Seal gaps where gas, water and drain pipes enter the wall, using cement or a metal-mesh filler.
  • Check the back of the chimney duct and exhaust fan openings; fit mesh if needed.
  • Keep the gap under the main kitchen door closed with a brush strip.

Bathrooms and balconies

  • Use closable or mesh drain covers — rats can come up through drain lines on lower floors.
  • Seal the opening around the washing machine outlet pipe.
  • Check AC pipe holes in balcony walls; these are often left oversized.

Doors and shafts

In society flats, the gap at the bottom of the main door and service-shaft doors are common entry points. A rubber or brush door sweep is inexpensive and effective. Report open shaft panels to your maintenance office.

Food and waste

  • Store grains, pet food and snacks in hard containers, not plastic bags.
  • Empty kitchen dustbins every night and use bins with lids.
  • Do not leave food out for stray animals near your door; it draws rats.

Ground floors and builder floors

Ground-floor homes and builder floors with gardens face more pressure. Trim plants away from walls, keep parking areas clear of stored items, and check the base of walls for burrows.

Signs proofing is not enough

Proofing keeps new rodents out, but it will not remove ones already living in a false ceiling, behind a kitchen plinth or inside a sofa. Watch for fresh droppings each morning, new gnaw marks on wires or food packets, a strong ammonia smell in closed cupboards, or scratching sounds at night. Any of these means there is an active rodent inside, and you need traps or bait stations first.

Also watch for "runways" — dark greasy smudges along the bottom of walls or along pipes where rats travel the same route every night. Those are the best places for traps and the best clue to where the entry point is.

When to call a professional

If you see droppings, gnaw marks on wires or hear scratching in a false ceiling, there are rodents already living inside. Proofing alone will trap them in. You need removal first — traps, glue boards indoors and locked bait stations outside — and then proofing. Our technicians in Indirapuram do both in the same programme and show you every gap they find.

Talk to your society

If rats are coming from the basement or garbage area, ask the RWA to take a rodent programme for common areas. Flat-by-flat treatment cannot fix a source that is shared by the whole building.
